How to obtain it?
As a foreigner, European or non European, you have the possibility to request and obtain the citizenship after being resident in Italy for a certain amount of years.
In fact, by law to request the citizenship the years that are being counted are the years when you were registered as a resident in the anagrafe of your comune, this is why it is called “Cittadinanza per residenza”
How many years of residency (residenza) the foreigner needs to request the citizenship?
There are different cases:
-If you are a Non-European citizen, you can request the citizenship after 10 years of residency
-If you are a European citizen, you can request the citizenship after 4 years of residency
-If you are a refugee or a stateless person after 5 years of residency (these 5 years start from the when your asylum seeker application)
-If you were adopted (as adult) by an Italian citizen after 5 years of residency (these 5 years start from the adoption)
-If you are a foreigner who worked for the Italian government for at least 5 years, even if it was abroad
-If you are married with an Italian citizen after 2 years of residency or 3 if you are living abroad (the marriage certificate must be registered in an Italian comune and the count starts from the day of the marriage), the period can be half if the couple has children
-If you were born in Italy from foreigner parents, when you are 18 years old (while had the residency always in Italy for these 18 years), in this case you have one year to declare your will of obtaining the citizenship
What are the other requirements?
-You need to prove with a tax declaration or Cud that you earned at least 8263,31€ in the last 3 years before the request, and these years must be continuous. If you are applying also for a dependent relative the amount will be 11.362,05€ and will be increased to 516€ for each person.
-Your birth certificate that must be translated and legalized
-The criminal certificate of your country, translated and legalized and of any other country where you lived before coming in Italy
–Marriage certificate (ONLY in case of the request of the citizenship by marrying an Italian citizen)
–B1 certificate of Italian Language (it will be not necessary if you have the long term permesso)
–Certificato Storico di Residenza (A document where you can see all the history of your residency)
-Payment of the digital marca da bollo (16 euros)
-Payment for the application (250 euros)
Some exemptions:
-In case of a citizenship by marriage with an Italian citizen, the foreigner will not need the requirement of the income
-In case you are a refugee or a stateless person and for you it is impossible to request the birth certificate and the criminal certificate from your country, you have to do an atto di notorietà with the help of the Italian court
How long a foreigner has to wait after the request?
You have to wait by law at least 2 Years and during that time you have to keep all the requirements (Residency, income, etc.)
