What is Family Cohesion?
Family Cohesion is a procedure that allows you to connect a relative to your permesso di soggiorno when he is already in Italy.
Which relatives can I include under my permesso?
You can include the same relatives allowed under Family Reunification:
- Spouse
- Minor children: This includes children born out of wedlock or children of your spouse. In this case, the other parent must give their consent.
- Adult children: Only if they are fully dependent on you due to serious health issues and full disability.
- Dependent parents: They must be financially dependent on you and must not have any other children residing in their home country.
What documentation do I need?
The documents required are the same as for Family Reunification. The most important documents concern your accommodation and your financial resources.
What documents are required for the accommodation?
You need to obtain the “idoneità alloggiativa” also called “idoneità abitativa” housing suitability certificate from comune. This document confirms that your apartment has all the sanitary requirements and enough square meters for you and the relatives, to live in.
How much income do I need?
You need to sum up the minimum social annual security + the half of this amount, for each relative you want to connect to your permesso. The social annual security this year is 7101,12€, and the half of it, it’s 3550,56€. So to do the family cohesion for one relative it will be necessary to have: 7101,12+3550,56=10.651,68€.

How can I prove my income?
You can prove your income using a CUD (Certificazione Unica) or your tax declaration: 730/Modello unico
Do I need to submit a kit for my relative?
Yes. Your relative must submit a permesso di soggiorno kit at the post office to apply for the permesso di soggiorno for family reasons.
Can I apply for Family Cohesion if my relative is in Italy on a tourist visa?
This is a key issue. By law, your relative must already be in Italy with a different type of permesso di soggiorno, not a tourist visa. However, since there are a lot of discussions about this law, some questuras may still accept the application, but the chances of rejection are very high.
What if my relative has a tourist visa issued by another country?
If the chances of approval are already low with an Italian tourist visa, they are even lower with a tourist visa issued by another country.
I just arrived and applied for my permesso di soggiorno, and my relative is here with a tourist visa. Can I still apply for Family Cohesion?
According to Law Decree 145/2024, you must reside in Italy with a valid residence permit for at least two years before starting any Family Cohesion or Family Reunification process.
