Some basic stuff to know:
- The Italian residence permit, permesso di soggiorno, is the document that allows foreigners from Non European countries to stay in Italy for a certain period.
- There are different types of permesso di soggiorno based on the type of visa the foreigner used in order to enter in Italy.
- The foreigner has 8 working days to send the kit for his permesso di soggiorno, from the date of their arrival in Italy.
How to request it?
Most of the types of permesso di soggiorno must be requested by filling the so called “kit del permesso di soggiorno” that the foreigner can request in any post office with sportello amico.
There are also a few types of permesso, like the international protection that must be requested directly from the Police Station, the questura.
Instead, to request some other types of permesso di soggiorno, or some conversions of it, it will be necessary to request the authorization of the prefettura with the nulla osta.
Important to know:
The foreigner does not need to request it if they stay in Italy for no longer than 90 days.
How much does the foreigner have to pay for the permesso di soggiorno?
- Every time the foreigner needs to send the kit, it’s necessary to buy a 16€ marca da bollo (it’s possible to buy it in any Tabaccaio)
- He also has to pay 30€ of postal service
- And at the end the cost of the permesso di soggiorno:
- 70,46€ if the duration is 1 year or less
- 80,46€ if the duration is more than 1 year until 3 years
- 130,46€ if the foreigner is requesting the long term permesso (10 years)
What is the duration of the permesso di soggiorno?
The duration of the permesso di soggiorno is based on the type of residence permit the foreigner is requesting, the maximum duration of a normal permesso di soggiorno is 3 years, but there are also types of permesso di soggiorno that cannot be longer than 1 year.
What happens after you send the kit from the postal office?
You receive a receipt (“ricevuta”) where it’s written when you have to go to the questura for your fingerprint appointment (in some cases on the receipt it is written that you will receive the date of the fingerprint via SMS or letter). While you are waiting for your permesso di soggiorno, the receipt is the document that allows you to stay in Italy, so you have to take it everywhere with you.
