Can I drive with my driver’s license in Italy?

As you may know you can drive with your foreign license(in case it is Non European), only if you have a copy of it translated and legalized with you, and only for 1 year from when you were considered as a fiscal resident, the same if you have an international driver’s license.

So how can I convert it into the Italian one?

There are two different cases, if your license is European or Non European

What if it is European?

• In this case if the license has the maximum duration established from the European law (Art. 7, paragraph 2, 3), you can drive with it until its expiration, then you will have to convert it into the Italian one and once you receive it, your foreign one will be revoked
• Instead in case the license has the maximum duration that overcomes the European law, or it is without expiration, you have to convert it within 2 years from the residenza anagrafica or the fiscal one.

If the driver license is expired there are two cases:

1. It is expired less than 5 years ago: you have to show the receipt of the physical and mental suitability, it will also be checked if you have sanctions on your license
2. It is expired more than 5 years ago: firstly, you have to make a special request to do the “esperimento di guida” or you have to do a revision exam

It is not possible to convert the European license, if you obtained it with a conversion from a Non European license that is not in the list of the convertible licenses in Italy.

What if it’s non European?

In case your license is non European you can convert it ONLY if your foreign license is from a country that has an agreement with Italy that allows to convert the license, this is the list:

• Albania (Agreement until 12th July 2026)
• Algeria (Agreement until 4th April 2031)
• Andorra (Agreement until 31st August 2029)
• Argentina
• Bosnia and Herzegovina (Agreement until 17th March 2030)
• Brazil (Agreement that will start from the 28th April 2025 till 28th April 2030)
• El Salvador (Agreement until 4th August 2021)
• Philippines
• Japan
• Israel (Agreement until 22nd August 2028)
• Kosovo (Agreement until 29th January 2030)
• Lebanon
• Macedonia (Update of September 2012 of the type of driver’s license following the agreement of the 23rd January 1998)
• Morocco (New agreement until 3rd June 2030)
• Moldova (New agreement until 8th November 2030)
• Principality of Monaco
• Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Also applicable to Gibraltar, Bailiwick of Guernsey, Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Jersey) (Agreement until 30th March 2028)
• South Korea
• San Marino
• Serbia (Agreement until 17th December 2028)
• Sri Lanka (Agreement until 9th April 2031)
• Switzerland (Agreement until 12th June 2026, Prolonged from 13th June 2026 to 12th June 2031)
• Taiwan
• Tunisia (Agreement until 20th July 2030)
• Turkey (Agreement until 18th July 2028)
• Ukraine (Agreement until 24th January 2027)
• Uruguay (Agreement until 17th March 2020)

Other countries which the conversion is possible only for certain people:

• Canada (Diplomats and consular staff)
• Chile (Diplomats, plus their relatives)
• USA (Diplomats, plus their relatives)
• Zambia (Citizens on government mission, plus their relatives)

It is NOT possible to convert other Non European licenses not present on the list.

The conversion is possible only if the license is valid and was obtained before obtaining the residenza here

You have a certain time to convert your license based on when you obtain the residenza:

1. 4 Years (Albania, Argentina, Switzerland or Ukraine) or 6 years (Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brasil, Kosovo, Israel, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Serbia, Turkey) Circolare prot.31762 del 24 ottobre 2023
2. 6 years for all the other countries in the list that have an agreement without an expiration, in this case it is also possible after the 6th year but it will be necessary to do a revision exam.

Where can I convert it and which documents do I need?

Documentation for the conversion of a European license:

• go to the Motorizzazione Civile office
• Fill the form TT2112, you can request it in the motorizzazione civile or online
• Receipt of payment of bollettino PagoPA of N003-DIRITTI 10,20 Bolli 32€- CONVERSIONE PATENTE DI GUIDA ESTERA PAESE UE
• IF the driver license is close to the expiration, expired, without expiration or its duration overcome the EU law: copy of the receipt of the medical visit from a licensed doctor
• IF there is no obligation to do the visits: 2 passport photos
• Foreign license, and copy of the foreign license
• ID Card, copy of the ID card
• Codice fiscale, copy of the Codice fiscale

• Copy of the receipt of the physical and psychological visit from a licensed doctor
• Foreign license and a copy of the foreign license
• Codice fiscale and a copy of the codice fiscale
• Permesso di soggiorno and copy of the permesso di soggiorno (in case of an expired permesso, expired permesso plus receipt, and copy of them)
• Carta d’identità and copy of the carta d’identità
• 2 passport photos

For some of the foreign license it is necessary also a sworn translation: Traduzione giurata in bollo: Albania, Andorra, Ukraine

Translation or certification of authenticity released by the embassy or the consulate with the visto of Prefettura: Algeria, Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Philippines, Japan, Lebanon, Morocco, South Korea, Serbia, Taiwan, Tunisia

Without the visto of Prefettura: Israel, Moldova, Turkey
