What is a CCNL?
The CCNL, or Contratto Collettivo Nazionale di Lavoro, is the National Collective Labour Agreement in Italy. It’s an agreement made between workers‘ unions and employers’ associations. It regulates individual employment relationships and some aspects of the mutual relationship between workers and companies.

How can I know which CCNL applies to me?

Why is it important?
The CCNL outlines all the rules that apply to your specific job sector. Employers are legally required to follow it when hiring or offering a contract. For example, based on your job level, the CCNL sets a minimum salary. By law, your employer cannot offer you a salary lower than that.
What other information can I find in the CCNL?
It includes rules about working hours, the 13th salary (tredicesima), and in some cases the 14th (quattordicesima), days off, workplace accidents, the notice period before leaving a job, and more. It also includes the rules that you, as a worker, must follow while working for your employer.
Why are there so many different CCNLs?
Because each sector or industry has its own rules, job levels, working conditions, etc., so each one needs its own CCNL.
Is the CCNL always valid?
No, the CCNL is usually signed for a specific period. After that, it must be renewed or updated through negotiations between unions and employers’ associations.
When a CCNL is updated, is it always good news?
Not necessarily. There is no rule saying that the conditions must improve. Sometimes updates may lead to better salaries or benefits, but in other cases, conditions may get worse.
