What I have to do after my arrival in Italy?

If you are a non-EU citizen staying in Italy for study, you must apply for your Permesso di Soggiorno within 8 working days from your arrival. The application is usually submitted through the postal kit at a Sportello Amico post office. After submitting it, keep the postal receipt carefully: it proves that you applied and contains the appointment details for the Questura, where you will complete the procedure with fingerprints and original documents.

Can someone send the application or pick up the permesso on my behalf?

Someone can help you prepare the documents, but you normally have to submit the kit in person because the post office must identify you with your passport or valid travel document. The final collection of the Permesso di Soggiorno is also normally personal at the Questura. You should bring your passport, postal receipt, and your old/expired permit if it is a renewal.

Is it possible to convert my student permesso to the work permesso before the graduation?

Yes, it can be possible, but it is not automatic. A student residence permit can be converted into a work permit with the nulla osta, before it expires if the legal requirements are met. For employment, you usually need a real job offer and the correct employer documents. For self-employment, you need documents proving the activity and the required financial conditions. The exact procedure depends on your type of study permit and personal situation, so it is better to check the case before applying.

Can i work more than 20hours with a student permesso?

In general, a student Permesso di Soggiorno allows work up to 20 hours per week and 1,040 hours per year. If the work becomes full-time or goes beyond the allowed student-work limit, you usually need to convert your permit into a work permit.

Can I travel outside of Italy with expired permit and the receipt of the renewal?

If you are renewing your Permesso di Soggiorno, you can usually travel to your home country and return to Italy with your valid passport, expired permit, and postal receipt. However, you should avoid stopovers or transit through other Schengen countries, because the renewal receipt is generally not recognized as a valid travel document in the Schengen Area. Before booking, always check the route and confirm with the airline or the relevant authorities.
